Chinese Lucky Numbers and Unlucky Numbers

We all know that there are Chinese lucky numbers and the unlucky ones that applies to a whole lot of situations and emblems. But when interpreting the meaning the meanings of the numbers, bear in mind that it is important to know that the meanings differ in different regions and also depending on the dialect.

In Feng Shui, all even numbers (2,4,6…) are counted as Ying and all uneven numbers (1,3,5,…) as Yang. Let’s start to decipher the Chinese lucky numbers and unlucky numbers one by one now.

One

In the Eastern or Chinese culture, the number one stands for loneliness and back luck, for authority. But one is also a symbolic number that represent the highest, the most superior. One is assigned to heaven

Two

Two is being considered as a positive number and stands for union (yin and yang) of opposites and reciprocal trust. Its pronunciation (in Cantonese) sounds much like the word “simple” – implying that we can get what we hope for easily. Two is assigned to Earth.

Three

Three is also considered as a positive and meaningful number as its pronounced as “lively”, thus the attributes of growth and eternity are linked to this number. A favourite magical Feng Shui symbol comprises of placing three coins under a healthy plant in order to nourish wealth. Three is assigned to human beings.

Four

In the East, four is being labelled as the most negative number and to be avoided at all cost because the pronunciation of “four” sounds like the word “death”.

Five

Five is a positive and also a neutral number. In the world of Feng Shui, it is a mystical number, for instance it represent the phases of transformation (Five elements) and of the directions (north, south,east, west and center). But in some Chinese Feng Shui tradition, this is a number to avoid because the pronunciation sounds like “nothing”

Six

Six is the number for good luck and also a symbol of prosperity, wealth and abundance.  It is being pronounced much like the word for “rolling” or “in movement”, that means it provide good conditions for moving towards wealth and abundance.

Seven

Seven is considered as a holy number as its pronunciation sound like the word “certain”, which give special meaning to certain numbers.

74 – Dying is a certainty

Eight

This is a number that everyone loves and in Feng Shui, eight is the ultimate number of good luck because it pronunciation sound like “blossoming”, “growing” or “wealth”. Eight embodies the order in nature – in the eight trigrams or the eight directions of the compass. Eight is always a favourite for house and mobile phone number, as well as car license plate too.

Nine

Nine is the number that stands for “long life”, because when pronounced in Chinese, it sounds like “longevity”. Nine is also considered as an auspicious number and is another favourite for number combinations.
